Cleaning Slate

These coasters have been hewn from rock 500 million years old. Each piece is different; grayness varies, the edge chipping is always irregular, some even have specs of golden pyrite. They’re as timeless and unique as the sports memories.

Slate is a natural stone and may be stained through the absorption of liquids and oils.

Protecting and Sealing Slate: Put a drop of olive oil on a rag and rub into the slate to seal the stone similar to sealing a cast iron skillet.  Wipe down afterwards with a dry rag so that the surface is not oily.

Standard Cleaning: Wipe with a mixture of warm water and a few drops of mild dish detergent using a soft cloth or sponge.

Deep Cleaning: After standard cleaning, apply a light amount of teak oil with a soft cloth.

Stain Removal Options:
1. Mix water and hydrogen peroxide in equal parts.  Apply sparingly to stain, let sit for five to ten minutes minutes, then scrub with a soft scrub pad or a soft-bristled brush.
2. For deeper stains, mix hydrogen peroxide and baking soda into a bubbly paste. Apply the paste to the stain and let sit for five minutes.  Wipe clean with a damp, warm towel.
