It had been 12 years since the Oregon State had lost a Civil War in Corvallis, and as the higher ranked team, they assumed they would prevail here and secure a berth in the Rose Bowl. But Oregon had other plans. By the 4th quarter Oregon already had a commanding lead, and they went on to score another three touchdowns in the fourth. The quarter started with what may have been the most impressive TD of the game, a 74 yard TD pass from Jeremiah Masoli to Terrence Scott.

1989 Independence Bowl
Hold the Line
Oregon vs. Tulsa
27 - 24
December 16, 1989
Independence Stadium, Shreveport, LA
It had been 26 years since Oregon had last gone to a bowl game, but the win in the Independence Bowl against Tulsa launched them into a new era of success. In a night of freezing rain and wind the two teams traded scores and in the fourth quarter the score was tied at 24 - 24 with Tulsa driving. Oregon's defense stalled the drive at midfield but Tulsa decided to go for it on 4th and short. The Oregon defense came up with a huge stop with Mark Kearns diving through a hole to hold at the line of scrimmage. Oregon then drove for a field goal that won them the game.
